Beadling Soccer is a hundred years old! The first recorded Beadling team dates from 1898. It was formed from workers at the mine operated by the Beadling brothers on Painters Run Road. The machine shop of that mine is now the Beadling Sports Club. Since then, many Beadling teams have made history, including the one which won the National Amateur Cup in 1954. In the 1960's youth soccer came to Beadling and it is now the premier youth soccer organization in Western Pennsylvania. Four teams have won the US Youth Soccer Association's Region 1 Championship.
To commemorate
the Centenary, the club has published a handsome 84 page book profusely illustrated with
photographs of teams and the Beadling community which grew up around the mine. It is rich
in local history with reminiscences of 'old timers' and a history of mining and soccer in
the area. It includes pictures of all the 1998 youth teams. Buy your copy while supplies
last - it will be a collectors' item! It is available from K&K Soccer at $10.
The Beadling Centenary was also celebrated at a banquet for current players, coaches and parents on June 3 last year. At the Beadling Sports Club on December 6 a gathering of 'old timers' attended a supper and a slide presentation of photographs from the Centenary book by Ken Ball, one of the authors, who played on teams in the late 1950s.
